Here's a seldom-seen bootleg of demos and rehearsals, listed as '74/'75-but it could be even earlier. One reason to think so is Sam Ellidge, Robert Wyatt's son & Pip Pyle's godson, was born 23 May 1966 and sounds maybe a year or two younger here than on the 1975 Rainbow Theatre recording.

Another reason is that "Let's Eat (Real Soon)" is still being demoed (without lyrics), and it was finalized in Worthing Studios in October '73.

The third reason is that Dave Stewart bought his Rhodes (heard here) in August '73 (according to Calyx).

Finally, by Spring of '75 Hatfield was already rehearsing what would become National Health numbers.

Hatfield was in Belgium on August 4, 1973 and in Frankfurt on the 17th & 18th, and toured France in September. They recorded their single at Manor Studios in October. Therefore these MAY be home recordings (at Pip's house, from the sound of the children playing in the background) from late August? Of course this makes the Christmas song a total non sequitur. 🙁 And they didn't play either "Let's Eat" or "Fitter Stoke" in Paris in September (or anything else from these rehearsals).

If nothing else this set demonstrates how much work goes into making the music sound effortless.
This set is never going to sound pristine, but I did a little click & hum reduction on it. The cassette recorder used here sounds like the type that turns off-and-on with a switch on the mic, so I elected to leave in those noises (for authenticity).

The Digital_Man says:
"I have more questions than I do have answers about this interesting Canterbury recording, and I fully realize that there are people out there who can probably interpret it better than I can. But here's the story: I obtained this back in my tape trading days and I'm pretty sure that I got it in the summer of 1993. The insert on the tape says exactly this:
"Hatfield + the North - Various rehearsals
Side 2 includes segment with Sam Wyatt!"
To my ears, it does indeed sound like Hatfield and the North rehearsals, but from when? Prior to 1993 obviously, but it sounds like it could be much older - possibly even "Rotter's Club" writing/rehearsal sessions? Rehearsal for a tour? I think it seems to be Richard Sinclair who is most prominently featured - perhaps this is his rehearsal tape? I would greatly appreciate any insight that others could share on this recording down in the comments.
In digitizing the recording, I kept everything. Every click when Richard (or whomever) presses start or stop on the tape recorder is included. When there were gaps of more than a few seconds of dead air, I would cut it or occasionally fade out and then back in. But every single sound on the tape is included in this torrent. Even when Richard(?) gets a phone call, you can hear him talking faintly in the other room.
You'll notice that the first track has many frustrating clicks and "pops" in it. I tried cleaning it up, but then it was riddled with little digital artifacts instead of analog ones, so I just decided to leave it (and the recording) as it is. [I removed them manually - RC]
I eagerly hope that people who download these files will be able to contribute more information about them (a more precise tracklist would be great).
I think the quality is B+/A-, but it varies a lot.
