about

According to Richard, these are early rehearsals for a projected third Hatfield and The North record. When Hatfield broke up in early June '75, the tracks "Binoculars," "Tenemos Roads" and "Clocks and Clouds" ended up coming out under the National Health banner. "Videos," later recorded with Hugh in 1983, did not reappear until the RSVP album (1994) and "Somewhere in France" (1996).

"My friend Andrew recorded these rehearsals at the request of the band. Details are vague but it was in a back room of a pub in Hammersmith in 1975. Andrew has been good friends with Dave Stewart from a long time back. They lived near each other in East London. He also ferried Richard around at the time.

This was the period when Hatfield was drawing to a close and National Health was starting. I’m not even sure Richard has heard these recordings.

I’ve tried to get more information out of Andrew but it’s difficult as he had a stroke about twelve years ago. Although he is fine he has suffered from lost memory as well as behavioural changes. I can attempt to get more information out of him but it will be sketchy."
-William Hayter

"It *is* Hatfield, spring 1975. No doubt about that. It’s clearly Richard on bass plus they’re playing some of his material, which they wouldn’t do in a NH context. This is a major archival find, that in fact changes everything we thought we knew about the final days of Hatfield. In terms of methodology I think it would [have been] better to call on people’s expertise THEN put the thing online. But I am glad people get to hear it, so…"
-Aymeric Leroy

Hatfield were in Spain in January, France in February, back home in March, in April toured Germany and Holland, home again in May, and broke up June 1st. So these rehearsals must have been recorded in March or late May? I don't know about you, but I don't hear any big arguments during these rehearsals (aside from Pip needing new drumsticks at the beginning of "Tenemos Roads") so I'm guessing probably March?

Thanks to William Hayter for providing the tapes!

This is a "recording of indeterminate origin," i.e. a bootleg. If you buy it from me it'll be the first time anyone in the band has seen a quid from it.
