about

We just received a DIFFERENT recording of this concert, from a different (unknown) taper in the same hall. It's somewhat better quality, closer to the stage (sounds almost like a soundboard), plus it's complete. So what the hell why not include both versions. What's a few bytes between friends?

New version (tracks 10-17)
Richard Sinclair
Knitting Factory, New York, NY, USA
December 12th (or 13th), 1992

Notes:

I think this is an AUD recording, but it is very nice nonetheless. Richard sings all his hits. This is just him on stage going for a song. If you liked Hatfield & Caravan you should enjoy this. While this is very scaled back, Richard's solo discs have been outstanding. I only wish he would do more.

Thanks to Joerg (Propylaen2001) for the tapes

Original version (tracks 1-9)
RICHARD SINCLAIR
Knitting Factory, NYC
1992-12-13 (not 2002-12-12 as listed in a previous upload)

Straight from Canterbury, this was Richard's first solo tour of the USA. As you can see from the postcard [back side att.], this particular date had not even been announced yet. I can't remember how I heard about the gig, but it may have been from fellow tape traders. I do know that when I showed up at the Knitting Factory, there was some question as to whether or not Richard was going to play. I remember the ticket-taker saying "if he shows up, he can play." Thankfully, he did.

I also know with absolute certainty that I am not the only one who recorded this show. I definitely traded this show on tape back in the mid-'90s, but this is the first time I've digitized it and shared it here. Still, I know with complete surety that there are other recordings of this show out there - specifically one that splits "Keep On Caring" in two? [see above]. Anyway, my "Keep On Caring" is intact, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how I could possibly miss recording the very beginning of this show. My recording starts late, a little bit into "Going for a Song." You would think that for the last master I ever made, I would have had my act together. Apparently not. (Maybe someone wants to take the time to make a hybrid of the recordings of this gig?)

Anyway, other than that significant blemish, the sound quality is not bad. Also, I remember that Sinclair's girlfriend, Heather Kinnear, was sitting near me and caught me taping. She checked to see that it was not a DAT tape (which it wasn't) and then allowed me to continue - nice of her.

I saw Sinclair a few other times in New York. At least once solo beneath the "Time Café" and at the "Caravan of Dreams" restaurant(!!) with the rest of his band in April 1993. Alas, I didn't record either of those...but maybe someone else did?

about

Richard Sinclair Martina Franca, Italy

The leading voice of the Canterbury Scene. Beginning with the Wilde Flowers, on to Caravan, Hatfield & the North, Camel and all his recent group efforts, Richard Sinclair's singing and bass playing have been a constant source of delight for lovers of Canterbury music. A deep, low voice, a talent for memorable melodies few can match, plus an imaginative and fluid technique on the bass and guitar. ... more
