You don't suspect my life's a mess You probably think it's groovy Meeting people every day See some place abroad [LP: See some plays abroad] And I admit that when the time is right It can be quite a laugh Even though that's not often [LP: But you know that's not often] Eventually, I think that you will agree I'm only putting lines out And shifting gears, missing years, disappear As for you, I couldn't bear to think of it They said you were Swedish You asked me for a chocolate bar Then you went and spoilt it all by eating it What a pain, what a nause You can imagine my delight Was like some R. Crumb magazine come to life Thank you ladies, you had us all I hope you all enjoyed it [LP: I hope you both enjoyed it] But just the same I'm happy just to sit around at home With Pamela making cups of tea and washing clothes [LP: With Pamela looking elegant and writing prose] Now anyone could easily see [LP: If anyone's in need of me] I'm basically a cretin [LP: I'm drowning in the bathroom] Bing billy bong, silly song's going wrong Ding dong ding, dong ding dong [LP: Ping pong ping, clong cling clong] Ping pong ping, I had gone [LP: Tie me up, turn me on] Bong billy bang, Desperate Dan, frying pan [LP: Bing billy bang, Desperate Dan, frying pan] Ding dong ding, bong bling blang, Michael Miles, bogey man [LP: Cling clong cling, bong bing bang, Michael Miles, bogey man]

about

"Afters" was a compilation LP put together by Virgin in 1980 combining mostly bits and bobs of Hatfield's two albums (1974 & 1975). Tracks 1 & 2 were Hatfield's debut 1973 single, and tracks 12-14 are live recordings. "Afters" has not been re-released on CD (except for a very limited 2011 edition in Japan), so as such it is effectively unobtainable.

Incidentally, Big John Wayne was physically snipped out of the Rotters Club master tape for this release, which is why there's a volume jump on the CD reissue when a safety master had to be Scotch-taped back in.

"Oh, Len's Nature" is an anagram of "Nan True's Hole" (as was "Ethanol Nurse.") It was the name of John Peel's cottage in Great Finborough.

The printing of the cover (in the US at least) was so mishandled that only one in ten copies was readable.

Finally, the single version of "Fitter Stoke" was expanded and re-recorded for Hatfield's second LP, "The Rotters' Club" (Nov. 1973 & Jan. 1974), with minor lyric changes (see lyrics attached). A third track, recorded at the same time as the single, was released only on the Virgin Records sampler "V."

Richard Sinclair Martina Franca, Italy

The leading voice of the Canterbury Scene. Beginning with the Wilde Flowers, on to Caravan, Hatfield & the North, Camel and all his recent group efforts, Richard Sinclair's singing and bass playing have been a constant source of delight for lovers of Canterbury music. A deep, low voice, a talent for memorable melodies few can match, plus an imaginative and fluid technique on the bass and guitar. ... more
