about

Another bootleg, but this one doesn't sound too bad. This was the second date of the Virgin/NME 'Crisis Tour' with the Kevin Coyne Band and the Lol Coxhill-Steve Miller duo.

In September 1974 the Virgin Crisis Tour which Hatfield and the North co-headlined with Kevin Coyne, the opening act was a duo of Steve Miller (Phil’s brother) and Lol Coxhill (from Phil’s first band Delivery). Here is a recording of this duo performance which I found in Phil’s collection of CDs. on the label is written: “Virgin Crisis Tour Sept 74 Steve + Lol = Genius”

Draper isn’t sure whether it was Faust’s charismatic producer/spokesman Uwe Nettelbeck who came up with this marketing ruse, or Richard Branson himself. The latter had a fixation on the discount concept that ran through his whole career, from the mail-order company to Virgin Atlantic, which took as its model the low-fare approach pioneered by Laker Airways. The marketing ploy was also used in 1974 with Virgin’s Crisis Tour, a name that played on the feeling that Britain was on the verge of collapse, beset with strikes, inflation, shortages in shops, rising unemployment and dark whispers of national decline and a possible military coup to restore order. To cheer up young rock fans feeling the pinch, Virgin offered bargain-rate admission to a series of concerts around the country featuring acts like Henry Cow and Hatfield and the North – all you had to do was cut out the coupons in the NME [New Musical Express].

about

Richard Sinclair Martina Franca, Italy

The leading voice of the Canterbury Scene. Beginning with the Wilde Flowers, on to Caravan, Hatfield & the North, Camel and all his recent group efforts, Richard Sinclair's singing and bass playing have been a constant source of delight for lovers of Canterbury music. A deep, low voice, a talent for memorable melodies few can match, plus an imaginative and fluid technique on the bass and guitar. ... more
