about

Here's something to add to the off-kilter Canterbury torrents upped by Digital Man: Hatfield & the North playing at a party and with the help of an unknown sax player! The date of the show is unknown, I received this in a trade CD-R only with the information below. Sound is very good, recorded very close and probably from a very low gen tape. The playing sometimes is too relaxed (even sloppy sometimes! - ouch!) and people can be heard chatting in most of the quiet moments but it doesn't detract the enjoyment. Definitely one for the fans. Enjoy!

From H&TN Facebook:
"Anyone know who is playing the sax on this? It's a rather interesting thing hearing sax sort of noodling around in the background."
- Phlakaton

"An entry at the Planet Gong website suggests that it's Elton Dean."
- Dave (in MA)

It sounds more like Didier Malherbe to me. I'm going to guess this was recorded in the first half of April 1974, when they were about to go on tour with Gong, with whom Malherbe played. Plus, they were still doing "Blane," an old Egg number, which was dropped from the setlist by the middle of the year. From the size of the applause, it doesn't sound like a "private party" to me either. More likely a pub gig, with the audience a couple of feet away.

This is a "recording of indeterminate origin," i.e. a bootleg. If you buy it from me it'll be the first time anyone in the band has seen a quid from it.

The cover photo is Marlborough Town Hall, by Colin Smith... overlaid with the name of the town, in the same typeface as Marlboro cigarettes. 😀

The leading voice of the Canterbury Scene. A deep, low voice, a talent for memorable melodies few can match, plus an imaginative and fluid technique on the bass and guitar. ... more
