Thodoris: Was it an interesting experience to play “I am a Believer” on Top of the Pops (1974) with Robert Wyatt, Nick Mason and Fred Frith?
RS: Yes, it was funny. It was a nice experience to make that single. Then, we had to do this Top of the Pops show. Funny. Robert is a funny guy. We didn’t play the music live on the programme, it’s all miming. Andy Summers (The Police –guitar), who is a great guitarist, was also there. The only music we played together that day, was outside the studio. It was at Dave MacRae’s (Matching Mole –keyboards) house. In the studio, we were only miming. It was difficult for Robert who was in a wheelchair and the producers of the show didn’t want to film him. It was difficult for Robert because that was his pop song. So, there were bad moments, too. For me, it was a great time to be part of a pop backing band in Robert’s pop song. It’s a very nice line-up, wasn’t it? It’s an interesting line-up (laughs).

Produced by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, with the leading “art rock” musicians: Andy Summers on acoustic guitar, Nick Mason on drums, Richard Sinclair on bass, Fred Frith on violin. Drummer Wyatt had fallen out of a hotel window less than a year before, becoming paralyzed from the waist down. The Top of the Pops producer wanted Wyatt seated in a wicker chair, on the grounds that his use of a wheelchair "was not suitable for family viewing." Although Wyatt won the day, he was never invited back.

Robert Wyatt released his solo album "Rock Bottom" on 26 July 1974. The album had been largely composed prior to his accident, but during convalescence, he rethought the arrangements to adjust to his new circumstances, and many of the lyrics were completed during this period. The album was met with mostly positive reviews.
Two months later Wyatt put out a single, a cover version of "I'm a Believer", which hit number 29 in the UK chart. Both were produced by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. There were strong arguments with the producer of Top of the Pops surrounding Wyatt's performance of "I'm a Believer", on the grounds that his use of a wheelchair "was not suitable for family viewing", the producer wanting Wyatt to appear in a wicker chair. Wyatt won the day and "lost his rag but not the wheelchair". A contemporary issue of New Musical Express featured the band (a stand-in acting for Mason), all in wheelchairs, on its cover [included as a bonus in the download]. Wyatt subsequently sang lead vocals on Mason's first solo album "Fictitious Sports" (1981), a suite of songs composed by American jazz musician Carla Bley.
