about

Finally got the files for this, thanks to Roy/iggy1.

A representative of the lyrical progressive band Camel from the first Japan tour in 1979, the performance at the Osaka Welfare Pension Hall on January 17th and the performance at the Nagoya City Assembly Hall on January 19th are recorded from the high-quality audience recording master.
The Tokyo performance that was broadcast on the radio at that time is familiar, but this Osaka and Nagoya performance is also a remarkable collector’s item that can not be overlooked as a valuable live sound source at that time!

Tracks 1-7:
17th January 1979
Koseinenkin Hall, Osaka, Japan

Original Notes (from scottstrades):
This recording is part of Camel's first tour to Japan, a country they have included on their tour itineraries ever since. The same band members played as toured Europe in late 1978.

There are 5 (6?) known concerts, and I believe there are recordings from every one of them, but I can only present the 3 dates* and 4 recordings I have. If anyone has any of the other dates, and is able to post them, I for one would appreciate it!

1979-01-13: Koseinenkin Hall, Tokyo (possibly a non-existent show)
1979-01-16: Shibuya Koukaido, Tokyo
1979-01-17: Koseinenkin Hall, Osaka (*aud)
1979-01-19: Shikoukaido Hall, Nagoya (*aud)
1979-01-22: Koseinenkin Hall, Tokyo
1979-01-23: Koseinenkin Hall, Tokyo (*aud & radio broadcast)

Many Camel tour date lists mention these 6 Japanese shows, however on the Nagoya tape Andy clearly identifies it as only their third concert in Japan. There are three explanations I can think of for this inconsistency;
1. the Nagoya recording is incorrectly labelled. I don't think this is likely, as it would make the 'Nagoya' tape actually Osaka, and lead to the conclusion that the 'Osaka' tape is also mislabelled.
2. Andy can't count beyond two. Unlikely for a musician, especially one excited about visiting Japan for the first time.
3. One of the early Tokyo dates listed is a furphy. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furphy) Considering the risk of pre-booking four Tokyo dates on Camel's very first Japanese tour, I think this is the most likely explanation. It is possible only 2 or 3 were pre-booked, and an extra Tokyo show or two could have been added following a good response to earlier shows, but I think that is unlikely considering the short notice. Also, the Shibuya Koukaido was the venue for the 16th, so a later return to Tokyo at a different venue would make some sense. So I reckon the 13th/Koseinenkin Hall is the dubious date.

So this is the Osaka concert, an incomplete recording unfortunately, only documenting the last half of the show. This is all I have heard of circulating from this date. It is a mono recording, fairly close and clear, but marred by some high frequency overload distortion.

Tracks 8-23:
19th January 1979
Shikoukaido Hall, Nagoya, Japan

This is a good stereo audience recording and documents the entire concert. It is a little hissy in the quieter moments, but thank heavens no one has tried denoising this tape, as there is lots of ambient detail to enjoy. On this recording, Andy clearly identifies this as the band's third show in Japan.

This is a "recording of indeterminate origin," i.e. a bootleg. If you buy it from me it'll be the first time anyone in the band has seen a quid from it.

Richard Sinclair Martina Franca, Italy

The leading voice of the Canterbury Scene. Beginning with the Wilde Flowers, on to Caravan, Hatfield & the North, Camel and all his recent group efforts, Richard Sinclair's singing and bass playing have been a constant source of delight for lovers of Canterbury music.
